Fading Red Light of 'The Cross

Fading Red Light of The Cross documents the demise of Sydney's notorious Kings Cross as a hotbed of nightlife and entertainment. The large-scale, multi-panelled artwork captures the collapse of the red light district, entertainment industry, party culture and hedonistic appeal that have contributed to its infamous image.

Illustrating the impact of state government policies curbing nightlife in Kings Cross, the work depicts neon-lit bars, clubs, sex arcade and adult-oriented institutions that have been economically decimated. As Kings Cross continues its makeover into a boutique and ‘beautified’ neighbourhood, Fading Red Light of The Cross presents this transformation as taming of a place that long served as relief valve for society’s wilder side.
